Everyday chemicals in our environment can be difficult to avoid and may impact the risk of breast cancer. It's crucial to be mindful of chemicals that can influence hormones, like estrogens, in our bodies and try to steer clear of them whenever possible.

SOME INGREDIENTS TO TRY AND AVOID IN COSMETICS

Xenoestrogens—
Are synthetic industrial chemicals. Considering that these environmental estrogen mimics potentially promote hormone-related cancers, an understanding of how they interact with estrogenic pathways in human cells is crucial to resolve their possible impacts in cancer. At the systemic level, exposure to exogenous estrogens has been linked to increased breast cancer risk during certain life stages known as the windows of susceptibility (WOS) including the prenatal, pubertal, pregnancy, and menopausal transition periods, during which the mammary glands undergo anatomical and functional transformations. Therefore, environmental hormones (e.g., endocrine-disrupting chemicals/EDC) and certain therapeutics (e.g., prescribed for the coexisting medical conditions or in the form of the hormone replacement therapy) can influence breast cancer risk, development, or outcome.

Bisphenol A (BPA)—
In 2020, BPA was banned from receipts in the UK and EU due to the health risks posed to unborn children of shop assistants who regularly handle receipts. BPA is found in a lot of plastic products. It is an Xenoestrogen which mimics oestrogen and can effect breast cancer multiplication. Further reduce your exposure to BPA by not using plastics, aluminium or microwaves

Parabens—
Are preservatives found in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. They have been found in breast tissue. Parabens are a group of EDC’s endocrine-disruptiove chemicals. The most common parabens used in cosmetics are methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben. Products that often use parabens include cosmetics, sunscreen, makeup, moisturisers, hair care, shaving products and deodorants. In a study parabens concentrations were associated with earlier breast development

Benzyl Benzoate—
Found in fragrance in various cosmetics, make up, deodrants, body wash and skin products. If use of underarm cosmetics is a factor in the development of breast cancer, then options for prevention could at last become a reality through individual decisions to cease usage or through alterations to product formulations. Formaldehyde—
Used in nail products, shampoors, soaps and hair products. At high concentration formaldehyde is a carcinogen. Further reading

Phthalates—
Found in many shampoos, perfumes, soaps and in the coating of some medications.

Benzophenones—
Sunscreens and cosmetics contain Benzophenones UV filters that can accumulate in breast tissue. Due to their environmental toxicity, certain states have prohibited their use
